History & revival
This longstanding building
stands as a witness of
Andros’ native history.
According to local customs and carefully gathered supporting clues, it was initially housing the first school of the area. In later years, with silk becoming an important source of income for the local population, it was used as a silk-weaving school. For this reason an annex was added, in order to shelter the trainees and give them the opportunity to learn the applied techniques in the best possible way. In the beginning of the 1920’s, the silk industry was heavily stricken by an illness that destroyed most of the mulberry trees on the island. In addition to that, the rapid spread of touristic development in the Greek islands led to the transformation of the building into a hotel unit.
In 1936, the building acquired its first permission to operate as a hotel
The hotel operated successfully for several years and had paid host to three of the most important scholars of Greece, A.Empeirikos, O.Elytis and M.Karagatsis, whose work had a huge positive impact on Greek people, during the after war period.
In the 1950’s the property was bought and went back into operating as a hotel, under the name Krinos for the second time.
This time a restaurant was added inside the hotel, both for hotel and non-hotel guests. This restaurant was the first restaurant of the area, a factor that made the hotel, once again, a unique attraction of the island. The hotel operated successfully for several years and had paid host to three of the most important scholars of Greece, A.Empeirikos, O.Elytis and M.Karagatsis, whose work had a huge positive impact on Greek people, during the after war period.
The first think tanks of Modern Greek history
We take pride in the fact that, during their visit in the hotel, the three scholars were organizing the first think tanks of Modern Greek history and were also inviting many French and British intellectuals to join them. This went on until the 1970’s, a dark period for Greece because of the political and financial instability.
The hotel was once again on track
In the mid 1970’s, when the crisis was over the hotel was once again on track having received financial support and kept on working successfully until the year 1988. That was an end of an era.
the revival
our effort to bring it back to life and revive its original function
The sight of a derelict building with such a magnificent and historical past was the main inspiration behind our effort to bring it back to life and revive its original function. Its renovation was based upon an inspired architectural study and the accompanying interior decoration plan, which paid all due respect to the character and history of the building. Only in particular cases, where stability issues were of concern, did the necessary interventions take place, in support of the existing walls.
The interior design of Krinos Suites Hotel is a blend of relaxing elements and style of the original building, enriched with artistic photographic material from the island and the various periods of the building’s history and renovation. Interior and exterior colours and materials were chosen in accordance with the natural scenery of the island.
